A gentle opening hole. Avoiding the bunkers on either side of the fairway will set up a mid/short iron to the green.
Pro's tip: The second shot always plays longer than it looks so take more club than you think.
One of the toughest holes on the course. A long uphill par 4 with danger everywhere off the tee.
Pro's tip: Avoiding the gorse on the corner of the left to right dogleg will set you up for a long second shot to a small green guarded by two bunkers.
The first of the par 3s is guarded by bunkers on the left and right of the green. A lovely drop hole that can play anything from an 8 iron to a driver depending on the wind.
Pro's tip: Playing to the heart of the green is the best advice.
A driveable par 4 for the longer hitters when conditions prevail. Otherwise, lay up of the deep pot bunkers in the fairway to leave a short iron to the green.
Pro's tip: Do not miss the green left, as saving par will be difficult from here.
A great looking hole from the tee. This long sweeping dogleg hole slowly rises to one of the highest points on the course. An accurate drive is required to avoid the trio of bunkers on the left and trees beyond. Only the longest off the tee will attempt to go for the green in two.
Pro's tip: Beware of any front, left, hole location on this deceptively fast green.
This long par 4 turns south and the general lie of the land is from left to right. There are magnificent views across Hove to the sea and the chimney of the power station acts as an excellent marker. A good drive will leave a long second shot to a large green with bunkers short and right to avoid.
Pro's tip: For those fortunate enough to reach in two, it leaves a hard two-putt for par.
This drop hole affords wonderful views over the byre to the clubhouse and sea beyond. The shortest hole on the course but not necessarily the easiest. Beware of the strategically placed bunkers!
Pro's tip: The prevailing wind against often demands a much longer iron than its distance implies.
A short but difficult right to left dogleg par 4. The courageous will risk the trouble and the out of bounds on the left to go for the green when conditions allow.
Pro's tip: An iron off the tee sets up a short iron for birdie.
This hole returns back to the clubhouse. Negotiate the two fairway bunkers to leave a mid to short iron into the green.
Pro's tip: The green is deceptively long so take care in choosing the right club or three putts are on the cards.
This right to left dogleg requires 2 accurate shots. Avoiding the cross bunkers sets up a fairly short approach but getting close to the flag is difficult as you cannot always see the bottom of the flag.
Pro's tip: A tee shot short of the fairway bunkers will leave you in good position to attack the pin, avoid going left.
A short but hazardous hole. A blind tee shot to a sunken fairway. The hole often entices the long hitters to go for it, but beware!
Pro's tip: If all the bunkers are avoided then a short pitch to the green will give a birdie opportunity.
A long, difficult hole with an undulating fairway which will swing the ball towards a well placed bunker on the right. A slight dogleg left means hugging the left side to shorten the second shot. A large green, so a three-putt is always possible.
Pro's tip: Keep your second shot down the left side for the best chance of reaching in two, otherwise the sloping land will gather the ball to the right.
A tough par 3, where a long iron or fairway wood is required to reach a fairly small target.
Pro's tip: Beware of the hidden greenside potbunker on the right and out of bounds just over the green.
A good drive uphill from the tee avoiding the hazard in the fairway will set up your second to an elevated green.
Pro's tip: Ensure you are aware of the flag colour as it will assist club selection.
A narrow fairway that’s hard to find. A drive long enough will give a clear view of the green otherwise you’re faced with a blind second shot. A par is always a good score here.
Pro's tip: Two bunkers guard the green and beware the deep bunker on the right.
A long, narrow dogleg left with a camber on the fairway that slopes left to right. Be sure to stay on the landing area, sometimes with a long iron off the tee to leave a long iron into the green. A hard green to find in two that will often leave a lengthy putt.
Pro's tip: Anything to the right down the length of this hole and you’re most likely to lose your ball.
The last of the short holes but probably the toughest. A long iron or fairway wood aimed at the left side of the green is the best policy here. Any shot right will leave a tough up and down to save par.
Pro's tip: The green has many subtle slopes, so look carefully.
West Hove’s signature hole. Currently the longest hole in Sussex and a tough finish to the round. A drive avoiding the right-hand fairway bunker will leave another long second to lay up of the road. Even the biggest hitters rarely have a chance to get on in two. A par here is an excellent score.
Pro's tip: The third shot will be a mid/short iron into a green that has out of bounds all around.
LOCAL RULES
1. OUT OF BOUNDS
a) Over the fences and hedges bordering the course.
b) Beyond the white posts around the water tank on 18th and behind 13th and 18th
greens.
c) When playing the 8th, on or over the track on the left.
d) Within the Greenkeepers’ byre.
e) On or to the left of the 15th fairway when playing the 12th hole.
2. IMMOVABLE OBSTRUCTIONS
All artificially surfaced roads, paths, steps, irrigation equipment including fixed
sprinkler heads – relief may be taken under Rule 16.1. In addition, if a ball lies in the
general area and an immovable obstruction on or within two club-lengths of the
putting green and within two club-lengths of the ball intervenes on the line of play
between the ball and the hole, the player may take relief without penalty as follows:
The ball must be lifted and dropped at the nearest point of complete relief to where
the ball lay that;
a) is not nearer the hole,
b) avoids intervention and
c) is not in a penalty area or on a putting green. The ball may be cleaned when so lifted.
3. PROTECTION OF STAKED/BASKET PROTECTED TREES
(plastic sheath does not constitute a stake).
If a player’s ball lies anywhere on the course other than in a penalty area and it lies
on or touches such a tree or such a tree interferes with the player’s stance or area
of intended swing, the ball MUST be lifted, without penalty and dropped within one
club-length not nearer the hole. Rule 16.1f applies.
4. Relief may be taken as in 3 above for the 100, 150 & 200 yard distance markers.
5. ARTIFICIAL HOLE PLUGS
Players are reminded that Artificial Hole Plugs on each green are Immovable
Obstructions and that the provisions of Rule 16.1a apply. The effect of this Rule is
that if the player’s ball lies on the putting green and the artificial hole plug intervenes
on their line of putt, the player may take relief. If the player elects to take relief, they
must lift the ball and place it, without penalty at the nearest point of relief that is not
in a penalty area. The nearest point of relief may be off the putting green.
6. COURSE ROAD
All ground within one club-length of the edge of the course road, may be treated as
an immovable obstruction (Rule 16.1a applies).
7. Other Rules may be introduced at the discretion of the Committee and displayed
outside the Professional’s shop.
